The Breeding Barn at Shelburne Farms — one of the largest open-span timber structures in America, big enough to hold its own weather — fills up with cheese. This year it happens on Sunday, September 20, when the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival returns for its 14th year. Cheesemakers from every corner of the state set up long tables under that vast timber roof, and for one afternoon you can taste your way through more clothbound cheddar, alpine wheels, and fresh chèvre than most people encounter in a lifetime.

Vermont cheesemaking is stubbornly small — herds with names, aging caves in converted barns, families who have been at it for generations alongside newcomers who left other careers to milk goats.
