Vermont Getaways, Season by Season
Shelburne’s position in the Champlain Valley means the experience genuinely changes with the calendar — from the Ben & Jerry’s Concerts on the Green series in summer to the richness of fall foliage in September and October. Every season has its case for a stay.
When to Visit and What to Expect
Heart of the Village Inn is open year-round. Here is an honest look at what each season offers and what to plan for.
Spring — April through June
Spring in Shelburne tends to arrive gradually. April is genuinely quiet — fewer visitors, better room availability, and the village starting to shake off winter. The hills around Shelburne green up quickly once May arrives, and by late May the area feels fully alive again.
- Maple sugaring season runs through March and April — sugarhouses in the region welcome visitors during mud season
- Shelburne Farms fully re-opens by mid-May — guided tours, farm walks, and the working landscape of the Champlain Valley begin again
- UVM Commencement takes place in mid-May; Middlebury College Commencement follows in late May — both drive demand in the Burlington area during those weekends
- Shelburne Village is walkable and pleasant in spring without summer crowds
- April mud season is real in Vermont, but village-based guests at the inn are largely unaffected — the inn is on Shelburne Road, not a dirt road
- Shelburne Vineyard opens for tastings as the season picks up

Summer — July and August (Peak Season)
Summer is the inn’s busiest season, and with good reason. The Champlain Valley in July and August is genuinely spectacular — warm, green, with the lake accessible and a full calendar of events within easy reach. Shelburne Farms is in full swing, and the Concerts on the Green series at Shelburne Museum draws visitors specifically looking for a walkable place to stay.

Fall — September and October
Fall may be the most photogenic season in the Champlain Valley. The hills change color fast in October, and the light in late afternoon across the fields near Shelburne Farms is something specific to this place. September is still warm enough for outdoor activity, with harvest season adding a particular character to farm visits.
- Vermont Cheesemakers Festival at Shelburne Farms — typically held in September; a major draw for food-focused travelers
- Shelburne Farms harvest season — the farm is especially active with its dairy and agricultural programming
- Peak Champlain Valley foliage: typically mid-late September to early October — each year is a bit different. The sugar maples along Shelburne Road and across the surrounding landscape are exceptional at peak
- Shelburne Museum’s outdoor grounds are beautiful in fall color
- Cooler evenings make for comfortable walks through Shelburne Village
- Burlington’s Church Street and waterfront remain fully accessible and less crowded than summer
See our Fall Foliage Weekend guide for planning specifics, including when peak arrives in the Champlain Valley.
Winter — November through March
Winter at the inn is the quietest season, and that’s a genuine selling point for the right traveler. The inn is warm, breakfast is included, parking is easy, and the village is calm. Shelburne Museum’s Winter Lights illuminates the museum grounds — an easy walk from the inn. Burlington is approximately 7 miles away with winter dining, live performances at the Flynn Center, and Church Street’s year-round activity.

When to Book
Availability at Heart of the Village Inn varies significantly by season and weekend. Here is honest guidance on when to plan ahead.
Book as Early as Possible For:
- Peak foliage weekends (October) — these are the most competitive dates of the year. Book months in advance if a specific foliage date is your target.

- Vermont Cheesemakers Festival (September) — a focused event that brings food travelers specifically to Shelburne Farms; the weekend books fast.

- Holiday weekends — Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s; these are popular with adult travelers specifically because of the adults-only atmosphere.
Typically Good Availability:
- April and early May — spring mud season and pre-event calendar make this one of the quieter stretches
- January and February — the softest booking season of the year outside of holidays
