Vermont Itinerary · Shelburne & Burlington

3 Days in Shelburne and Burlington, Vermont

This itinerary covers the three anchor experiences of the Shelburne–Burlington area — Shelburne Museum, Shelburne Farms, and Burlington’s waterfront and Church Street — with Heart of the Village Inn as your base each night.

The Full 3-Day Route

Three days is enough time to settle in rather than rush through. You’ll return to the inn each evening, wake to breakfast, and head out from Shelburne Village each morning. A 2-night stay gives you one full day plus two partial days — your arrival afternoon and your departure morning, both useful.

Day 1 — Arrival and Shelburne Village

Arrival Day — Arrive Early and Explore Before Check-In Plan to arrive in the Shelburne area earlier in the day. Check-in opens at 3:00 PM — your luggage can stay in the car while you explore first. Walk the village, stop at Shelburne Vineyard (approximately 1.0 mile), or visit Shelburne Museum (approximately 0.8 mile) before your room is ready. Check in between 3:00 and 8:00 PM; self check-in, no on-site staff. The inn is in the center of Shelburne Village — historic architecture, a genuine New England main street feel, and a quieter pace than Burlington approximately 7 miles north.
Late Afternoon — Shelburne Vineyard Shelburne Vineyard is approximately 1.0 mile from the inn — a Vermont estate winery producing cold-climate varietals. Tastings are a low-key first stop before dinner, and the setting is easy and relaxed. Worth checking current hours before you go, as seasonal schedules vary.
Evening — Dinner Shelburne Village has a handful of solid dinner options within a short drive. Burlington’s Church Street area and waterfront restaurant district are approximately 7 miles north — a strong option if you want a larger selection on your first evening.

Day 2 — Shelburne Museum and Burlington

Morning — Breakfast at the Inn A full custom breakfast is included every morning, offered 7:30–9:30 AM. You’ll select your preferences the morning before. There’s no need to rush; the museum is approximately 0.8 mile from the inn.
Late Morning — Shelburne Museum Shelburne Museum is one of the premier outdoor museum campuses in the Northeast — 39 historic structures spread across 45 acres, with collections covering American folk art, quilts, fine art, decoys, carriages, and a full-size Lake Champlain steamboat. Allow 2–4 hours depending on your pace. The museum is open late May through late October; verify the current seasonal schedule before your visit.
Afternoon — Burlington Waterfront Burlington is approximately 7 miles north. The Burlington Bike Path runs along the Lake Champlain waterfront — flat, well-maintained, and with open lake views toward the Adirondacks. The ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain is on the waterfront if you’d like to spend time inside. Church Street Marketplace is a 10-minute walk inland from the lake — local shops, cafes, and a good afternoon stroll.
Evening — Burlington Dinner Burlington has a strong restaurant scene for a city its size — farm-to-table, craft breweries, and a range of international options. The Church Street area and the South End are both worth exploring. Shelburne is approximately 7 miles south.

Day 3 — Shelburne Farms and Departure

Morning — Breakfast at the Inn Your final morning breakfast, 7:30–9:30 AM. A full custom-prepared meal before you head out for the day’s last stop.
Late Morning — Shelburne Farms Shelburne Farms is approximately 1.7 miles from the inn — a 1,400-acre National Historic Landmark on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. The farm store carries the property’s award-winning farmhouse cheddar alongside other Vermont products. Walking trails offer open views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains across the water. The property is open seasonally; verify current hours and programming before your visit, as the schedule varies by season.
Check-Out and Departure — Your Day Continues After 11 AM Check-out is at 11:00 AM — but your day does not have to end there. After checking out, you still have the rest of the day before heading home. Burlington makes an easy final stop before the airport: the waterfront, Church Street, or a quick lunch. Burlington International Airport is approximately 8.2 miles from the inn. If you’re heading south or east, you’ll pick up I-89 just north of Shelburne.

Planning Questions, Answered

Is this itinerary suitable for first-time visitors to the area?

Yes. This 3-day route covers the three anchor experiences of the Shelburne–Burlington area: Shelburne Museum, Shelburne Farms, and Burlington’s waterfront and Church Street. It’s a complete introduction without feeling rushed.

Is a car required for this itinerary?

For most of it, yes. Shelburne Museum is walkable from the inn (about a 15-minute walk). Shelburne Farms, Burlington waterfront, and Church Street all require a short drive. Burlington International Airport is approximately 8.2 miles away. Parking is included at the inn at no extra charge, which matters when you compare to staying in Burlington where parking is often a daily cost.

When is the best time of year for this itinerary?

Late spring through fall is ideal — Shelburne Museum and Shelburne Farms are both open during this season. Summer is peak season; October adds fall foliage across the Champlain Valley. Winter visits are quieter — Shelburne Museum is closed, but Burlington is active year-round with restaurants, the waterfront path, and the Church Street area.

Is breakfast included at the inn every day?

Yes. A full custom breakfast is included with every reservation, offered 7:30–9:30 AM each morning. Guests select their preferences the morning before. Dietary accommodations are available with advance notice. This is included in your room rate — not an add-on or package upgrade.
