Shelburne & Burlington Area

Things to Do Near the Inn

Shelburne Museum, Shelburne Farms, Shelburne Vineyard, and Burlington’s waterfront are all within easy reach of Heart of the Village Inn in Shelburne Village.

Heart of the Village Inn is positioned at the center of one of Vermont’s most activity-rich areas. World-class museums, working farms, a renowned winery, and Lake Champlain are all within easy reach.

Shelburne and Burlington for Adult Travelers

The Shelburne and Burlington area offers a genuinely interesting mix: a historic working farm on Lake Champlain, one of the Northeast’s most significant folk art museums, a respected Vermont winery, a walkable small town, and a vibrant mid-size city with a lively waterfront. All of this is within a short drive of the inn’s front door.

Heart of the Village Inn is a quiet, adults-only (21+) bed and breakfast in Shelburne Village, just minutes from Burlington. Designed for couples and relaxed getaways, it offers a calmer, more comfortable alternative to staying in downtown Burlington, with easy access to Shelburne Farms, Shelburne Museum, and Lake Champlain.

What makes the area particularly well suited to couples and adult travelers is the range. You can spend a morning at Shelburne Museum, have a wine tasting at Shelburne Vineyard in the afternoon, and walk to dinner in Burlington that evening. Or you can do nothing more strenuous than walk around the village, have breakfast, and sit by the lake. The area supports both approaches equally well.

Shelburne Museum

Shelburne Museum is one of the most significant folk art and Americana collections in the United States. Founded in 1947 by Electra Havemeyer Webb, the museum spans 45 acres and includes 39 historic structures relocated from around New England, along with major collections of furniture, tools, textiles, quilts, decoys, paintings, and the steamboat Ticonderoga. It is a genuinely unusual and substantive museum that rewards more than a quick visit.

The museum is also home to the Ben & Jerry’s Concerts on the Green, an annual summer outdoor concert series that draws regional and national performers to the museum’s grounds. For travelers attending Concerts on the Green, Heart of the Village Inn is the closest walkable lodging option.

The museum opens seasonally; visit shelburnemuseum.org for current hours and admission.

Shelburne Farms

Shelburne Farms is a 1,400-acre working farm, educational nonprofit, and National Historic Landmark on the shores of Lake Champlain. Originally developed by William Seward Webb and Lila Vanderbilt Webb in the late nineteenth century as an experimental model farm, it remains a working agricultural property today, producing cheese, maple syrup, and other farm goods.

Visitors can walk the farm trails, tour the property, see the lakeside farmhouse and the agricultural barns, and take in the views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks from the western edge of the property. Shelburne Farms also hosts farm dinners, educational programs, and events throughout the season. The farm opens in late spring and closes in late fall; visit shelburnefarms.org for current programming and hours.

approximately 1.0 mile

Shelburne Vineyard

Shelburne Vineyard is a Vermont winery producing cold-climate varietals suited to the Champlain Valley’s growing conditions. The tasting room is open to visitors for wine flights and bottle purchases. The vineyard offers a relaxed, adult-centered experience and is a natural afternoon outing for guests staying at the inn.

Vermont’s wine industry has grown substantially over the past two decades, and Shelburne Vineyard is among the more established producers in the state. Visit shelburnevineyard.com for current tasting room hours and seasonal events.

approximately 7.3 miles

Lake Champlain & Burlington Waterfront

Lake Champlain stretches 120 miles along the Vermont-New York border and forms one of the most scenic lake landscapes in the northeastern United States. Burlington’s waterfront along the lake offers a dedicated bike path, kayak and paddleboard rentals, ferry service to New York state, and some of the best sunset views in the region.

The lake is accessible more directly via the Shelburne Farms shoreline (approximately 1.7 miles from the inn), or via Burlington’s waterfront park and ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain (approximately 7 miles). The ECHO Center is a science museum focused on the Champlain Basin’s ecology and history, with exhibits and an aquarium-style display of native species.

Church Street Marketplace, Burlington

Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace is a four-block pedestrian commercial district in the center of downtown Burlington. It is the city’s primary retail and dining concentration, with a mix of local independent businesses, regional chains, and restaurants ranging from casual to destination-quality. Church Street connects the university hill to the waterfront and is the most walkable commercial district in Vermont.

Burlington itself is a small but genuinely cosmopolitan city for its size — home to the University of Vermont, a respected arts and music scene, and a level of food and beverage culture that outperforms what visitors often expect from a city of 45,000.

approximately 7 miles

Burlington Arts, Music & Culture

The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts is Burlington’s primary performance venue, presenting touring theater, dance, and music through the year. The University of Vermont’s campus offers additional cultural programming. Burlington has a notable independent music scene, with live music venues concentrated near Church Street and along the waterfront.

The Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, held annually in late spring, brings jazz performances to venues across the city. The Vermont Brewers Festival, held each summer, is another event that draws visitors specifically to the Burlington area. For guests combining a stay at the inn with Burlington events, the approximately 7-mile drive is straightforward — and you arrive back to safe, easy on-site parking instead of dealing with downtown challenges.

Seasonal Highlights

The Shelburne and Burlington area has genuine character in every season. Here is what each brings.

Spring

Vermont’s spring is a genuine season, not a brief transition. Maple sugaring arrives in March and runs into April, when cold nights and warm days trigger the sap to flow and sugarhouses fill with the sweet aroma of boiling syrup. Shelburne Farms and local farm stands begin their new season, and the Shelburne Museum opens in late May. Crowds are lighter than summer and the landscape is actively greening.

Summer

Peak season brings the Shelburne Museum’s Concerts on the Green, with live music on the museum grounds throughout the summer. Shelburne Farms is fully operational with farm tours, dinners, and events. Burlington’s waterfront is at its most active — sailing, kayaking, outdoor dining, and festivals. Book well in advance for summer weekends.

Fall

Vermont’s fall foliage is among the most celebrated in the northeastern United States. In the Champlain Valley, peak color arrives mid-late September to early October — each year is a bit different — roughly one to two weeks later than the higher elevations of northern and central Vermont. The combination of farmland, lake views, and village character makes Shelburne particularly photogenic in autumn. Rooms book well in advance for October foliage weekends.

Winter

Winter settles gently over the area, bringing a peaceful stillness. Shelburne Museum and Shelburne Farms are generally closed (though each hosts some winter programming — check their sites for current schedules). Burlington remains active year-round with restaurants, performance venues, and shopping.
